How much do you know the solenoid coil

A solenoid coil is a wire tightly wound around a conductive core with a hollow center. When an electric current is passed through the coil, a magnetic field is created, thereby effectively forming an electromagnet. In most cases, the energy provided by the electromagnetic energy is translated into simple linear motion to switch or actuate a variety of devices. Coil is one of the necessary parts for solenoid valve. but how much do you know the coil? From our experience, we can learn them by some features as below:


1.Voltage: Most solenoids are DC and can be wound for any voltage. Usually the voltage is 12VDC, 24VDC, 110VAC and 220VAC.
2.Power: Power is usually defined as the rate of energy transfer, expressed in watts and it usually being 2 watts to 50 watts.
3.Insulation grade: B class(≤130℃), F class(≤155℃), H class(≤180℃), C class(≥180℃)
4.Protection class: An IP rating is a two figure code number for example IP65, the first digit being the degree of protection against the ingress of solids and the second digit being the degree of protection against water. For instance, IP65( dust proof and spray water proof), IP54( dust proof and splash water proof), IP68( dust proof and can work under water)
5.Duty cycle: The Duty Cycle is expressed as a percentage and represents the proportion of time that a solenoid is energized. If a solenoid is energized for 15 seconds and switched “off” for 45 seconds before being energized again – then the total on/off cycle time is 60 seconds, expressed as 25% duty cycle.
6.Standard coil or special purpose: standard, self holding, explosion proof
7.Material: Usually it is made of copper. Regular coil Regular coil is made of copper wires, copper wire is used in power generation, power transmission, power distribution, telecommunications and countless types of electrical equipment.
Even the regular coil is not exactly the same, it has small difference from material, protection class and insulation grade. Now I’m going to make the following example to tell the difference.
1.Standard purpose solenoid with H class high temperature coil with DIN connect

Material: copper wires with plastic housing
Protection class: IP65
Temperature: under 180℃
This kind of solenoid is made of copper with plastic housing and has IP65 protection class, which has great ability of spray water proof and dust proof. It’s insulation grade is H class and has good resistance to high temperature. It has the same function as NASS brand solenoid coil.
2.Standard purpose solenoid with F class high temperature coil with steel housing

Material: copper wires with steel housing
Protection class: IP54
Temperature: under 150℃
The most difference from the first kind of solenoid coil is the material and the IP grade. As you can see in the picture, it has steel housing, which decide it doesn’t has good performance in water proof. Except the IP grade, it has the same good resistance to high temperature.

Temperature: under 180℃
As you can see in the picture, the biggest feature of this type is the wire out of the shell with full plastic surround. This special structure leads to the high protection class , IP68, which can totally used under water.
Explosion-proof solenoid with H class high temperature coil

Temperature: under 180℃
It’s usually used in the high pressure solenoid valve to prevent the explosion. According to the explosion proof class, it can be divided into Exm type, Exme type, Exd type and Exia type. It works by a coil encapsulated in plastic case inside, so they can not ignite other stuff . Otherwise, it can tolerance super low temperature till -196℃。

Protection class: IP65
Temperature: under 150℃
Self holding solenoid coil is usually used in the latching solenoid valve, which also is named pulse jet valve. This name comes from the unique working principle. When the power off, it still works because of the magnetism. It has many features, like no self heating, continues to hold even after the power is off and can operate by a pulse signal.
